Walking safety escorts are available for any student, faculty, or staff member who doesn't feel comfortable walking alone.

How do I request an escort?
Call 305-710-7991 to reach the on-duty Campus Safety Officer and the provide your location and where you are going.
Will Campus Safety Officers drive me to my vehicle?
No, Campus Safety Officers are only able to provide walking safety escorts.
How long will it take for a Campus Safety Officer to respond and escort me?
It depends on where you are calling from and other situations that are currently being addressed. We suggest you plan ahead and call several minutes before you plan to leave to minimize your wait.
When are safety escorts available?
Safety escorts are available weekdays from sunset to sunrise and 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays.
Bicycle Safety and Registration
Bicycle Lock & Registration Program
U-bicycle Locks and Registrations are provided to all bicycle owners by Rosenstiel School Campus Safety. To register your bicycle and receive your free bicycle lock, simply bring in your bicycle and your 'Cane Card to the Rosenstiel School Campus Safety Office located adjacent to the entrance of campus. If your bicycle is ever lost, stolen or confiscated for non-compliance with the University bicycle guidelines, registration will aid Rosenstiel School Campus Safety and or UM Police in locating and returning your bicycle. Anyone affiliated with the University in any way may purchase a discounted lock for $20.00, payable by cash or check to UMPD.

Non-Secured Bicycle Locking Program
The objective of the program is to eliminate the presence of unattended or unsecured bicycles making for fewer “easy targets” for thieves to steal. Rosenstiel School Campus Safety as a matter of practice will lock non-secured bikes as they are encountered. Should this happen to you, you will need to contact Campus Safety at 305-710-7991 to have the bicycle unlocked.
Abandoned Bicycle Confiscation Program
Rosenstiel School Campus Safety does confiscate abandoned bicycles. Abandoned bicycles are secured by red lock to the Rosenstiel School bike racks located under SLAB Breezeway.
Bicycle Laws & Safety
In the state of Florida, bicycles are legally defined as vehicles. Cyclists must obey the same traffic laws as other drivers. Pedestrians must be given the right of way. Cyclists should follow these guidelines. More than 70 percent of bicycle-related fatalities are the result of head injuries, please wear your helmet.
Bicycle Safety Tips
At night, always wear light-colored clothing and make sure you have an illuminated headlight and taillight—it’s state law. Ride with traffic. Don’t ride against the flow of traffic. All bicycles used, kept, or otherwise on the Coral Gables and Marine campus are required by University policy to be officially registered with Rosenstiel School Campus Safety or UMPD and secured whenever not in use at a designated bicycle rack with a Campus Safety issued U-lock. Bicycles in violation of this policy are subject to being secured and/or impounded. UMPD or Rosenstiel School Campus Safety bicycle registration and U-locks are free of charge.
Motorist Assistance Program
Rosenstiel School Campus Safety can provide jump starts to a vehicle when batteries are drained & put air in low tires. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to faculty, staff, students, visitors.
The Motor Assistance Program is designed to assist those who experience minor vehicle problems while on the Rosenstiel School Campus & Experimental Hatchery.
Wait times average from 3 to 5 minutes, although there may be occasional delays due to unexpected emergencies.
Campus Safety Officers will take every precaution not to damage your vehicle. However, the vehicle owner will be asked to sign a damage waiver form prior to this service. If a vehicle owner is uncomfortable with signing this waiver, Campus Safety Officers can assist in contacting other vehicle service providers.

Self-Defense Programs
S.A.F.E. Program
(Self-defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange)
SAFE is a 1.5 to 2-hour (WOMEN ONLY) self-defense class that focuses on awareness, risk reduction information, and a few basic, physical techniques. SAFE certified instructors teach the program several times throughout the semester. For more on the SAFE class, visit the NSDI SAFE course webpage.
R.A.D. Program
(Rape Aggression Defense)
RAD is a 12-hour (WOMEN ONLY) self-defense class, typically completed over the course of several sessions. RAD focuses on increasing overall awareness, risk reduction behaviors in various settings, and a diverse set of practical physical techniques. The RAD program includes a capstone portion of the class whereby attendees will undergo a simulation of a real-world situation. During this simulation, they may use the techniques they have learned on an instructing male officer. RAD certified instructors teach the program on an on-demand basis/schedule. Both of the above programs are available free to UM faculty, staff, and students.
On-Demand Booking:
Small groups and campus organizations may book one of the above courses at any time withRosenstiel School Campus Safety. Interested parties must provide a number of attendees, date(s) and time(s) that they wish to conduct the course (with at least 2-weeks lead time), and have identified an appropriate space on campus in which we may hold the class. Groups have a minimum requirement of 5 people in order to book a course. Individuals may call or email to be placed on a waiting list and be contacted when the next scheduled course becomes available.
